From Group to TEAM Training

WELCOME!

Untitled_1.png

Greetings! My name is Susan Leahy and I am the Co-Founder of Group To TEAM Leadership Solutions. We hope that this proposal gives you a feel for who we are and what we can offer to the Research Foundation at CSUSB Education Talent Search Program.

It is our intention for this proposal to serve as a “starting point” to direct future conversations. This proposal outlines the comprehensive, customized, training program that we would like to provide to ETS. The goal of this training is to inspire greater communication that fosters and deepens a TEAM orientation within ETS.  Everything offered in this proposal can be adjusted to better meet your specific training and development needs. We hope that you enjoy our online proposal and we look forward to working with you.

GROUP TO TEAM Guiding perspective

Further to our conversation on February 13th with Christia Williams, andthrough personal research, the following key values have been identified and are being used as our guiding perspective as we develop this training for your ETS program.

ETS Mission Statement

To create a pathway for underrepresented students to pursue higher education by encouraging academic excellence, providing support and resources, and promoting college readiness in our schools and communities.

Learning and Growth – the fact that ETS serves a community of underrepresented students makes it a powerful environment for “real life learning”.  From our perspective, traditional “command and control” models of leadership are giving way to collaborative leadership.  In the “team leadership mindset”, discovering shared goals and a common cause fuels inspired action, cooperative behavior, strengthens communication and has an impact on positive attitude amongst team members.  Leadership, in the context of team, is about support, coaching and mentoring rather than ordering people around.  A learning and growth orientation helps support constructive dialogue and problem solving, in order to handle day-to-day challenges as well as emerging challenges.  Establishing a strong “growth and learning mindset”, within ETS, will help develop an extraordinary team that can flourish.

Eliciting a Common Cause

Great teams organize around a common cause.  A primary facet of organizational excellence involves eliciting “buy in” for mission statements, shared standards, and core directives.  The following prompts represent just a few questions that we might utilize as part of an “inquiry process” intended to “crowdsource” a common cause and shared goals:

·      Who do we serve?

·      What experience do we want to promote?

·      What do we want to think and feel as a member of this team?

·      Who are our partners in co-creating an experience of TEAM?

·      How do we want to handle challenges as they arise?

Once a team establishes a clear vision of what they want to create, Group to TEAM supports them by exploring the behaviors, attitudes, actions, along with the types of communication, that support TEAM. We help them co-create standards and expectations to further promote the development of a highfunctioning TEAM.

Overview of Group to TEAM 4 Training INITIATIVE

This Four Phase Training Program will be given to:

  • The EST Program

Below is a sample of core outcomes, which we hope to achieve in this customized training:

  • Inspire people to choose and promote TEAM.
  • Offer a clear understanding about what attitudes and actions generate TEAM.
  • Give employees a simple, yet powerful, common language to support sustainable, productive and powerful teams.
  • Develop and practice communication skills that will impact how team members handle conflict between employees and managers. Handling conflicts constructively is one of the best ways to foster and strengthen TEAM.

Our programs instill a sense of personal ownership, so that each participant takes responsibility for creating and maintaining a TEAM orientation within the organization.

This program will be divided up into a four-part process that has proven extremely effective with our clients:

1 - INTAKE SURVEY

The process starts with a customized, online, intake survey. This survey will be sent to each manager to be completed two to four weeks prior to the training.

2 - PREPARATION WEBINAR

Screenshot_1_15_18__1_58_PM.png

The participants will attend a “prep” webinar 7-10 days prior to the in-person training.  This webinar establishes some of our key principles so that participants enter the training with a foundational understanding of our core premise.  It also introduces the Group to TEAM Facilitators (Freeman Michaels & Susan Leahy). This webinar will be about 30 minutes in length.

3 - IN-PERSON TEAM TRAINING

Participants will attend a daylong TEAM-building, in-person, training. This training will be co-facilitated by Susan Leahy MA CSP and Freeman Michaels MA (or other certified GTT trainer).

4 - INTEGRATION WEBINAR

After the in-person training, we offer an “integration” webinar, to support the integration of the principles and practices into the day-to-day operations of the TEAM. Offering an opportunity for your team to connect after the formal training is a key part of our effectiveness.  Most trainings fail to properly “follow up”, to ensure that the material is enacted by the team.

I absolutely love this program. I was fortunate to have had the privilege of going to great leadership and team building programs early on in my career. But there’s always only been two that I recommend, Stephen Covey’s and Dale Carnegie’s . Now there is a third: “From Group to Team”. The simple but out of the box approach was very effective for me.

GROUP TO TEAM SAMPLE CONTENT

Here is some sample content from our training module.

The Core Premise of Group to TEAM

GTT Premise – You only have two options: group or TEAM. Everything you do, say, think or feel is either keeping you in group or elevating into the experience of TEAM.

The Difference Between a Group and a TEAM

When people are operating from the mindset of “group”, their choices organize around “self-interest”.  When people operate as a team, they are organizing their choices around a “shared interest”.  Group is the default when people come together, while TEAM is a daily commitment and is an experience that is earned.

Team is not a destination TEAM is an EXPERIENCE you get to keep creating

This is a hugely important point to remind your team members as it has a direct impact on how our daily communication impacts our ability to generate the experience of team.

The question that our program constantly elicits is:

"Are you going to do what it takes to earn the right to call yourself a TEAM?"

Review the Reflections of a Great TEAM

·      Great TEAMS maintain great communication.

·      Great TEAMS drive great results.

·      Great TEAMS run great meetings

Integrating the “Group to TEAM” Steps

1- Ask the Question: Are we going to be a group or are we going to be a TEAM?

2- Create a TEAM definition: What do we want to think or feel as a result of being on this TEAM?

3- Continue to ask the question: Are we being a group, right now, or are we being a TEAM?

Thank you, Susan and Freeman and thank you Group to Team Leadership Solutions Inc. Your work over the past year with our organization has been life-changing for me both personally and professionally.
